Would it be surprising to discover that there’s a very important connection between the heart and the thyroid?
Emily came in for an adjustment. Emily’s 43, she’s a mom and a teacher. She said she had been having heart palpitations which were making her anxious, affecting her sleep, affecting her ability to work and to be a good mom. Obviously concerned about this. She went to her general practitioner who recommended wear a Holter monitor, to monitor her heart rhythm over a 24-to-48-hour period.
We also ordering some labs to see if we could get to the heart of the issue. The emailed response from Emily’s doctor said, “The heart monitor shows PACs which are premature atrial contractions. These are extra beats of the atrium of the heart when it contracts, causing heart palpitations. If this is bothersome(?) [emphasis added], please consider prescription for Metropolol 25 mg, one tablet daily.
Emily went on to say, “I’m not really sure what to make of this, but it seems like the medication is to minimize the palpitations and not really address the root cause of the issue. “. [A great observation!]
Emily and I sat down together to discuss the lab results to discover that her thyroid was running really hot! No big surprise here because potassium, sodium, and magnesium are three very important minerals, that play a big role in normal cardiac and normal thyroid function. The prescription that that she was offered actually reduces the sodium uptake and slows down the potassium release. However, her labs told us that low magnesium was making it hard for the system to relax and to calm down.
With some calming thyroid support that included a higher dose of magnesium, her symptoms very quickly started to subside.
We’re going to continue to monitor and test and we’ll make adjustments accordingly. It’s important to remember that nothing happens in the body without a reason! It’s vital to look at the whole system!
Emily could have chosen to take the medication and just cover up the symptoms. Instead, she asked a very important question of “why”. With that we’re able to get to the root of the problem.
